Exterior Canopies
Office buildings or other such structures often utilize a canopy where protection from the elements is desired as persons move from location to location. Each building code contains provisions for constructing a canopy, which frequently includes fire retardant treated wood. Because the wood is subjected to blowing rain and snow, it must be treated with exterior fire retardant formulation that can withstand weather exposure.
The wood is treated with a UL-labeled exterior-type fire retardant and finshed with a high quality semi-transparent stain.
Beauty, strength, durability, and safety are all characteristics of exterior fire retardant treated wood that make this product an excellent choice for canopies.
Insurance Recognition
Fire retardant treated wood is recognized by the insurance industry as slow burning and can result in reduced insurance rates when used in lieu of untreated wood.
Code Section
BOCA National Building Code, Section 3105
International Building Code, Section 3105
SBCCI Standard Building Code, Section 3106 ICBO Uniform Building Code: does not specifically address fire retardant treated wood for canopies.
As always for extra safety and security, FRTW can be used in any application where untreated wood is allowed.
